Nordic Perl Workshop 2008

May 6, 2008

The future is looking bright for this year's Nordic Perl Workshop. 17 talks registered so far and about 50 persons expected to attend, a third of them traveling to Sweden especially for the event. There will be much discussion about perl6, dynamic languages and type theory. I expect a very thought-stimulating week-end!

It's the first time I take such an active roll in organizing a programming conference and it's really a lot of fun, more than I had thought. The fun part is not so much about the administrative bits. Finding a venue, fixing a website, designing cool T-shirts, hunting for sponsors, most of which was in fact taken care of by Claes Jakobsson. The really fun part was getting in touch with folk. Mailing other developers that I have met at earlier conferences or just knew of by reputation, awaking their interest, beating the drum to call on software gurus, spreading the word. Other the past few weeks I have been in touch with a wide number of software geeks all across Europe and felt their enthusiasm. I have sensed the reality of the Perl community, as a very real and alive bond between people living widely apart but all sharing a similar passion for software development. And I felt part of it in my own humble way. It's quite uplifting really :)
